When you get approved for Social Security Disability benefits, you automatically qualify for Medicare coverage. However, there is a 24-month waiting period before health insurance begins.
You do not need to take action or call anyone to get the ball rolling. Social Security should mail your Medicare card to you three months before your 25th month of Disability.
Although most people have to go through the Medicare waiting period, there are two exceptions:
- Individuals with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, are eligible for Medicare the month their Disability benefits begin.
- People with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), or permanent kidney failure, also do not have to wait long. If you have ESRD and need dialysis, Medicare coverage begins on the third month after beginning dialysis. It may start sooner if you choose to do home dialysis or if you have a kidney transplant.
All other disabilities are subject to the 24-month waiting period. Of course, if you aren’t receiving Social Security Disability benefits, you will have to wait until you are age 65 to be eligible for Medicare.
