Asthma Disability benefits aren’t automatic.

Many people apply for Asthma Disability benefits, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to get them. If you can control your asthma with medication, you may not initially qualify for Asthma Disability benefits. If you suffer severe, repeated attacks that have constituted a medical emergency and continuously keep you from working, you’ve got a strong chance of receiving Asthma Disability benefits.

To determine your eligibility, the Social Security Administration will look at the frequency and severity of your asthma attacks over the past year. You will have to prove that you are under the care of a physician and, that despite prescribed treatment, you’ve had an attack at least once every two months or at least six times per year.

Two important facts to note:

  • Required hospitalization for more than 24 hours counts as two attacks
  • There must be an evaluation period of at least 12 consecutive months to determine your frequency of asthma attacks

Don’t meet the SSA’s criteria for Asthma Disability benefits? Don’t worry.

Even if you don’t meet the SSA’s criteria to qualify for Asthma Disability benefits, you should still file a Social Security Disability application. If you can prove that you can no longer do the work that you used to perform and that asthma also prohibits sedentary work (because of dust, smoke and fumes), you could still be approved. The skilled disability support staff and attorneys at SSDHelpNow.com can help.
