An aneurysm is a balloon-like bulge in an artery. If the aneurysm grows large enough, it can weaken the artery wall which can lead to a tear or burst. A burst causes dangerous bleeding inside the body and can be life-threatening.
Aneurysms can form in arteries of all sizes. They most commonly occur in the aorta, a major blood vessel about the size of a garden hose that carries blood from your heart to vital organs. They may also occur in a blood vessel supplying your brain, which can cause a stroke. They may also form in other blood vessels in your body, including in your legs, groin or neck.
